Home Early Years Curriculum

Pre-School

Classes are organised by age. A class teacher and an assistant are responsible for each class. There is a structure and syllabus for the Pre-School and the day is organised around a wide and varied range of activities to develop manipulative and social skills and the learning of English. Our aim is that children enjoy coming to school.

The teachers work together to organise 'themes' lasting between 1 and 2 weeks. This gives the classes a focus for the week and enables practical work and learning through experiences to arise from this theme.

The teachers spend a great deal of time talking and developing the children's language and listening skills. Through their experiences the children learn to recognise colours, shapes, numbers and their written name. Throughout the day they use pencils, colours, paints, scissors and many other media. They also complete puzzles and engage in sorting and matching activities

The children are also given the opportunity to play, whether it is in the home corner, or with the construction toys, or outside using the physical education equipment.

During each term we endeavour to create fun and exciting days to add variety to the children's experience of school. Special fun days are organised for example a 'Teddy Bears Picnic Day', a 'Colour Day' or 'Santa Day' or just children rotating around different class activities. Trips are also organised to places of interest such as Doha Zoo.

Reception

The Reception classes are housed within the same building with their own fully equipped playground. The children follow a curriculum and syllabus established by the Key Stage 1 co-ordinators. Reception year is a full and fundamental learning process linking from Pre-School to Year 1.

The children follow a timetable including Arabic given by a specialist teacher and there is a curriculum letter which is given to parents at the beginning of each term. Children receive a progress report at the end of the Tem 1 and Term 2, with a full report at the end of the academic year.

The teachers work together as a team with all the children following the same work and concepts each week. The topics we cover are developed in all areas of the curriculum and there are special days organised to introduce or conclude new topics.

Many varied activities are created to introduce new ideas and to make the learning experience fun and exciting also. Many learning situations arise from the children's first hand experiences and these are expanded in the classroom.

Reading is introduced in Reception with children having reading books without words, followed by simple word cards which lead on to a reading book. Children take these books and cards as part of their homework activities and they are continually encouraged to take care of their reading books. A small amount of homework is also given as a reinforcement of the work covered during the week.
