Reception classes have begun to bring home reading books as part of the reading programme.
We encourage the children to be independent by returning folders daily and taking their own books from the folder and replacing them. Please do feel free to comment and sign the blue reading record when your child has read at home. Currently most children are bringing home wordless texts as an introduction to the reading schemes used in school.
There is a list of suggestions on the photocopied “Take home card” your child receives with each book. Learning to read goes beyond books in a reading scheme. The ideas on these cards can be used with any book your child has at home. Find a comfortable place and share a favourite story with your child, you will both enjoy it! It goes without saying that motivation contributes to children’s success.
Children who have been exposed to books from an early age want to become readers.Read plenty of books to your child -they could be nursery rhymes, poems, stories and information books. If your child has an interest in cars, princesses or dinosaurs find books about it. Talk about the book, look at the cover and see if you know what the story is about. Ask your child to predict what will happen next in the book. Buy books as treats for your child instead of toys.
Let your child handle books, carefully turning pages one at a time. Remind your child how special books are by always ensuring they are replaced on shelves or book cases correctly. Books allow children to enter a magical world filled with endless possibilities. Enjoy reading! |
