In the Primary Department Art is taught by the class teacher in weekly one-hour lessons. It is often related to topic work but the focus on the key elements of drawing, painting, printmaking, collage and relief, textiles and sculpture is being developed. Year groups plan one unit of Art and DT each year as well as topic-related art.

Resources are split between the central stockroom and the art resource room in the Year 3 and 4 block. In the Year 1 and 2 block there is a large room where art takes place with the help of Primary assistants.

The school is frequently asked to take part in art competitions by outside agencies, and termly competitions organised by the House Co-ordinator are often art-based.

Infant Art

Art and design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the outside World. Pupils at Q.I.S. use colour, form, texture, pattern and different materials to communicate what they feel, see and think.

Through art and design activities the children learn to make informed judgements and practical decisions, becoming actively involved in shaping their own environments.

The children are shown that there is no right or wrong in creativity, but still learn to follow instructions given by their teacher to a project or task. They are encouraged to look after equipment and develop skills such as using scissors and glue, paint-mixing, etcetera.

At Q.I.S. we have a purpose-built large art room for Key Stage 1 children and a wide selection of resources available. Display boards are situated both inside classrooms and in the foyer areas. These are covered with the children's work for everyone to see and are updated regularly. They act as a form of visual stimulus and give the children a sense of pride and achievement in seeing all their hard work displayed. Plus all our visitors can enjoy them too!
