The Settlement of Doha

001_96_72_80In January we had a Year 7 Geography Trip around Doha, and it was amazing!  We all had so much fun, and we learnt stuff too!

Site 1 – The Modern Doha

The first place we went to was the Corniche.  The Corniche is an amazing place to chill out.  As soon as I step on the grass I can smell the sea.  I feel like I am in a green meadow with the sun on my face and the wind in my hair…wonderful.  The backdrop of the modern buildings is really inspirational.  What ruins it is the pollution.  STOP POLLUTING THE CORNICHE!  The Corniche is a wonderful place where families can walk, jog, have a picnic and a lot more…just keep it clean.

Site 2 – The Traditional Doha

The second place we went to was the Old Port.  It was a fascinating place and was much cleaner than we thought it would be. The build boats, fish, run tourist trips and also do pearl diving…the original function of Doha.  There is also a beautiful new museum and lots of important buildings.  It is certainly one of the most traditional places in Doha, but you still felt like you were in a modern city.

Site 3 – The Traditional Doha?

The next site we went to was Souq Waqif, a traditional Arabic market.  It looks really old but in fact it is very new!  We had so much fun there: I took a bunch of girls deep inside the souq and they thought we were lost…but I knew the way back out!  We bought some ice-cream and souvenirs here, but it was really interesting to see a traditional souq with spices, antiques and fabrics, but also with cash-machines and Dunkin Donuts!

Site 4 – The Future of Doha?

The final stop was to Villaggio…thank you Mr Carver!  He kept on telling us that we were to study the mall and the development outside (Aspire, artificial grass etc) but how can we not have lunch at Villaggio?!  We only had 30 minutes here, but it was enough to have fun and at the same time appreciate just how modern some places in Doha are…there is a canal in a mall in the desert?!

The Year 7 boys had their trip a few days after the Year 7 girls, and it seemed to go every bit as well.  I guess learning can be fun. Thank you to all the staff involved.
